XFree86 4.4 dead before arrival?

Yesterday, we discussed Mandrake's decision to revert their release-in-development from XFree86 version 4.4 back to version 4.3 because of issues with the new XFree86 license. To update this, the list of OS distributors opting out of XF86 Version 4.4, and future releases, based on licensing concerns continues to grow. While Fedora seems to be "preparing to support multiple X11 implementations", Red Hat has explicitly stated that they have no plans to ship XFree86 v4.4 under its current license. Also add to the growing list Debian, Gentoo, and OpenBSD.Zeit für eine Alternative?

The practical problem is that Mandrake needs to modify a lot of files/documentation to comply with this license. It's a bit late for that in the 10.0 release cycle. Another problem is that this license likely isn't completely compatible with the GPL.

Another problem is more social in nature, this license, the quibling between XFree86 developers (the core team mess) and the lack of social finesse of David Dawes don't really appeal for close cooperation.

If you notice the defensive post by Alan Cox that he's asking them not to change the license on his contributions, there's something wrong with it inthe sense that it doesn't appear as "free" software anymore (free as in libre). (Not that they could, since Alan owns what he wrote of course)

All the more reason to switch to a different X server, if that were available. But that doesn't help concentrate the effort to get good video drivers into the Linux world.

I suppose there are a few options, but the best option would be for XFree86 developers to rebel against this and try to revert this change. Another option is to fork 4.4rc2 and start XFree86-betterthanbefore or somesuch ;-)

NAj find ich nicht sonderlich tragisch. Kann eigentlich nur besser sein wenn mal was von Grund auf neu euntwickelt wird. WEil die Ausrichtung von Linux zum Xfree Anfang und die Ausrichtung heute liegen doch Weltn zwischen :>

Ich fand Simons Posting noch recht lustig--offenbar hängt's nur z.T. an den Lizenzbedingungen; die Leute scheinen einfach vom XFree-Team selbst langsam die Nase voll zu haben. ;D

In wiefern sind Y-Windows und Freedesktop denn eigentlich schon einsetzbar? Alsich mir Freedesktop das letzte mal angeschaut habe, sah's nach "in 2 Jahren könnt's was sein" aus.

XFree86 ist sowieso ein wenig strange. Ich habe mal gehört, daß da der Source eines Weltraum-Ballerspiels in Teilen drinsteckt. Leider ist XF86 IMHO noch ein notwendiges Übel das es AFAIK keinen gleichwertigen Ersatz gibt. Und bringt mal die GraKa-Hersteller dazu die Treiber für was anderes zu programmieren.
