What is RD790?
The RD790 is ATI’s next generation northbridge chipset for the AMD CPU platform, including support for HyperTransport 3.0 (HT3). It supports simultaneous operation of two second generation PCIe graphics cards by two x16 links, four PCIe graphics cards by four x8 links, or six PCI-E Gen2 devices by six x1 links.
The RD790 is a system northbridge only and it won't have an integrated graphics processor on any version.
The North Bridge implements PCI Express point-to-point links to external devices. It has 11 configurable PCI Express ports with 42 PCI Express lanes. These 11 PCI Express ports are divided into the following two groups:
• PCIE-GFX and PCIE-GFX2. Each PCIE-GFX and PCIE-GFX core has two ports configurable from x1 to x 8 lanes, or each combined to provide one x 16 lanes port (default configuration).
• PCIE-GPP and PCIE-SB. The PCIE-SB core has one port, dedicated to the southbridge and is configurable in x1, x2, and x4 lanes. The PCIE-GPP core has six ports with 6 lanes distributed across them in the following configurations:
• 4:2:0:0:0:0
• 4:1:1:0:0:0
• 2:2:2:0:0:0
• 2:2:1:1:0:0
• 2:1:1:1:1:0
• 1:1:1:1:1:1
The RD790 also implements Root Complex Register Blocks (RCRB) and a single Virtual Channel for each PCI Express port. The next picture describes the topology of the PCI Express configuration space from the perspective of the SBIOS.
