The latest version of the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite is designed to support the following Linux distributions:

* Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite
* Novell/SuSE product suite

Note: The ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite may install on a number of other Linux distributions. Refer to the Package Generation installation instructions for more information.
Note: AMD has accepted contributed packaging scripts to allows creation of other packages, but does not necessarily test, verify or warrant the reliability. Currently Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite and Novell/SuSE product suite are supported Linux distributions
System Requirements

Before attempting to install the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite, the following software must be installed:

* XOrg 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2; XFree86 version 4.3
* Linux kernel 2.4 or higher
* glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
* POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D applications

The ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite no longer provides precompiled Kernel Modules; all installations require GCC compiler and kernel-headers or kernel-source in order to enable 2D and 3D acceleration.

For best performance and ease of use, AMD recommends the following:

* Kernel module build environment - should include the following:
o Kernel source code: Either the Kernel Source or Kernel Headers packages
* ISSE Support enabled in your Linux Kernel
o Applies to Intel Pentium III and later CPUs only
o Enabled by default on version 2.4 and later kernels
* The rpm utility should be installed and configured correctly on your system, if you intend to install via RPM packages

The following packages must be installed in order for the Catalyst™ Linux driver to install and work properly:

* XFree86-Mesa-libGL
* libstdc++
* libgcc
* XFree86-libs
* fontconfig
* freetype
* zlib

New Features

This release of the Catalyst® Linux graphics driver introduces support for RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.
Resolved Issues

The following section provide a brief description of resolved issues with the latest version of the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite. These include:

* Moving a video window between two monitors in a big desktop configuration no longer crashes the Xserver. Further details can be found in topic number 737-28222
* Playing multiple videos at the same time with textured video no longer results in corruption being noticed. Further details can be found in topic number 737-28223

Known Issues

The following section provides a brief description of known issues associated with the latest version of ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite. These issues include:

* Corruption may be observed with certain applications on some Linux distributions which enable the Composite extension by default, e.g., RHEL 5. If you are observing application corruption, please disable the Composite extension. Further details can be found in topic number 737-28224
* Using the xgl enabled x-server interface disables display switching hot plug support
* Video tearing during playback. Further details can be found in topic number 737-26984
* There is no support for video playback on the second head in dual head mode. Further details can be found in topic number 737-26985

zusammengefasst:

- immer noch kein composite support (composite gibts ja auch erst seit 3 jahren)
- kein texture from pixmap support (da warten wir erst seit 1,5 jahren drauf)
- auf r500+ darf man sich beim video schauen an hübschem tearing erfreuen
- die performance ist immer noch genau so mies wie vor 3 jahren

und höchstwahrscheinlich schießt der treiber immer noch den xserver ab, wenn man versucht eigene modelines zu verwenden...

weiter so ati, ein buntes ccc für linux ist ja auch viel wichtiger als gescheite treiber http://ugly.plzdiekthxbye.net/small/s030.gif

Laut Phronix gibt es im 8.38.6 Probleme mit aticonfig, bei Verwendung des vesa-Treibers geht die xorg.conf verloren. Deshalb soll es nun erstmals für Linux einen Hotfix geben, leider konnte ich fglrx 8.38.7 aber noch nirgends finden: Klick! (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=764&num=1)

Danke und ich verkneife mir jetzt einfach mal weitere Fragen. Trotzdem schön, wenn du ab und zu was durchsickern lässt, die Aussichten sind ja garnicht mal so schlecht.

AIGLX vor Oktober wäre allerdings der Knüller, dann klappts auch mit dem standardmäßigen Compiz Fusion in Gutsy Gibbon. Ich drücke alle Daumen :)

Edit: Da fällt mir was ein, vielleicht steht ja der eine oder andere im Austausch mit AMD. Mit meiner X1900XT habe ich bei der Videoausgabe mit Totem seit jeher Farbfehler, das Bild hat einen extremen Blaustich. Mit "mplayer -vo xv" gibt es dagegen keine Probleme. Als workaround funktioniert, unter gstreamer-properties eine benutzerdefinierte Video-Ausgabe zu verwenden, wie sie in einigen Foren kursiert:
ffmpegcolorspace ! video/x-raw-yuv,format=(fourcc)YV12 ! xvimagesink
Nicht, dass ich dies im Detail verstehe, aber offenbar wird wohl der Farbraum richtig definiert, sollte eigentlich Standard sein.

Ich könnte das Problem zwar an AMD weiterleiten lassen, das ist allerdings nicht nötig.

Die Videoprobleme sind bekannt.
Dachte ich mir, ist ja kein Einzelfall und geistert schon lange durch die Foren.

So wie es aussieht hatte ich recht, der R600 Support wird bis zum neuen OpenGL Treiber zurückgehalten. Doch anscheinend wird er auch AIGLX, sowie kritische Videoplayverbesserungen mit sich bringen.

Es wird also dieses Jahr einen Wundertreiber geben. Ich persönlich gehe vom 4. Quartal aus.
Bin gerade unter den Tisch gekrabbelt, habe das Gehäuse geöffnet und meine Grafikkarte geküsst :D


Ich bin ja mal gespannt, ob Compiz Fusion es wirklich in Ubuntu 7.10 schafft mit standardmäßiger Aktivierung, wo doch ein erster, offizieller Release erst in einigen Wochen stattfinden soll.
Steht ja fest auf der anvisierten Featureliste, ich gehe davon aus, dass es kommt. Closed-Source Treiber wird man wohl trotzdem nachträglich manuell aktivieren müssen, aber hauptsache es ist bis dahin überhaupt möglich oder kommt bald darauf (Quartal4 ist lang) :)

offiziell ist er es nicht, aber in der praxis funktioniert er mit 7.2.
anders wäre es ja z.B. überhaupt nicht möglich den fglrx in ubuntu 7.04 verwenden...
